A truly unique opportunity to work with a vital charity in the Burnley area as they look to recruit a new Head of Finance to work across their business units.

Though they are embedded within the ethos of Burnley FC, they are financially independent from the football club. They rely on fundraising activities, donations, sponsorships and grants to do the work they do and every penny they raise goes to developing new opportunities for those who need it most.

The opportunity:

This is a brilliant opportunity to work direct for a leading CEO and make a real difference to the finance function and everything the charity stands for. A brief summary of the job :

  • Assume responsibility for managing, maintaining and developing the financial function of the charity.
  • Assume responsibility for all financial reporting as defined in the charity’s Financial Control Policy.
  • Contribute to the effective operational leadership and day-to-day management of the charity.
  • Implement and further develop financial processes and controls.

The job:

  • Monitor the financial performance of the charity and its trading subsidiary.
  • Prepare, review, implement, reposition and monitor the organisational budgets
  • Perform regular finance business partnering with appropriate budget holders and/or members of the senior management team.
  • Prepare comprehensive monthly management accounts for the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Trustees.
  • Present financial position, financial performance and other items to the Board of Trustees at quarterly appropriate governance meetings.
  • Prepare annual consolidated group and trading subsidiary statutory accounts , notes to the accounts and annual reports
  • Principal liaison with appointed statutory auditors and with HM Revenue & Customs
  • Payroll and Workplace Pensions manager for the charity.
  • Perform, attest and submit quarterly VAT returns for the charity and monthly VAT returns for its trading subsidiary
  • Further develop strategies for VAT and Gift Aid.
  • Assume responsibility for timely, accurate and complete financial to the Premier League Charitable Fund, to other grant reporting donors, and to other contract parties.
  • Implement and further develop efficient processes, systems and for the finance function and wider functions  as controls appropriate.
  • Oversee the charity’s grant inventory and oversee administration of grants
  • Oversee the charity’s principal risk inventory.
  • Evaluate the need for new technologies to meet the charity’s financial reporting requirements 
  • Complete Charity Commission and Companies House returns as appropriate.
  • Be a member of the charity’s Senior Management Team, appropriate operational leadership in contribution to the applying charity’s objectives.
  • Line manage one Finance Administrator and one Grants Administrator

General

  • Effectively manage other members of staff relevant to finance administration as and when requested by the Chief executive and Officer.
  • Contribute to the development of the charity’s support functions in liasion with HR, Secretariat , Marketing and Business, Policy and other charity policies
  • Take ownership of Financial Control Policy, Reserves Policy, Risk Management ensuring that staff members understand and conform to these policies.
  • Facilitate finance and similar training sessions for staff members as appropriate
  • To at all times represent Burnley FC in the Community in a manner regarding to dress,  presentation, personal professional hygiene, attitude, conduct and professionalism.
  • To be able to work flexible hours as and when the role of the job requires.
  • To be able to work some matchday hours over the course of a football season
  • To work towards agreed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Comply with and champion all charity policies.
  • Work alongside other team members to support in other areas of organisation as and when required to promote best the practice.​

  • Help all staff as appropriate to develop confidence and competence by modelling best practice and acting as a mentor.
  • Undertake all relevant and appropriate tasks assigned or delegated by the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Trustees.
  • Deputise for other members of the Senior Management Team at meetings and events, as and when necessary and appropriate.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
Essential:

  • Qualified accountant or QBE
  • Educated to degree level.

Desirable:

  • Degree in mathematics, business or finance related subject.

Experience Requirements  
Essential:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a financial role.
  • Experience of implementing and developing formal policies.
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience with accounting software (particularly Sage).
  • Experience of immediate term and longer term cashflow modelling and forecasting.
  • Experience of collating data from many different sources and systems and quickly translating it into information.
